q&a with wishwishwish

A while ago I did a q&a with a fave blogger of mine, Sara from Saraluxe, a mere 4 months later I decided to do another one, and in fact I'd really like to make it a regular feature.  I love reading these type of posts, and hear more from our favourite bloggers, and so I hoped you would too.

So in honour of that, here is Q&A number two, with Carrie from wishwishwish.  I picked Carrie because she is a real inspiration to me, her blog is the first (British) blog I ever discovered, way before I really understood what blogs were, and she is one of the reasons I decided to finally give it a go myself.

I also love Carrie's style (she has some of the most beautiful vintage inspired dresses), and her blog is like one big daydream, nostalgic, whimsical, and just...well, perfect.

Anyway, I felt Carrie's blog was on the opposite end of the spectrum to Sara's (stylistically) and yet they are both so great in their own ways, and both doing so successfully.  I wanted these Q&A's to be a little bit of a helping hand to us newbies, and so hopefully you'll gain some good advice as I have!

So here you go: Q&A with Carrie

1. When and why did you decide to start blogging?
I started blogging back in 2008 when I was just 17 - I had plenty of time on my hands and had always blogged in some form or another, so it seemed like a natural progression.

2. What would you like to do for a living (if Wish magazine doesn't become a full time career) and will your blog help contribute to that?
Blogging for a living would be the dream. But I have to be realistic! I'm currently in limbo after graduating from university, so have been on the hunt for suitable positions.

3. How would you describe your style? (I'd one day love to raid your wardrobe!)
It's vintage-inspired, girly, and with any luck, animal-themed (my favourite things are my Charlotte Olympia Kitty flats and my Vivetta cat skirt!)

4. Where do you get your inspiration from for fashion, blogging and just in general?
Anywhere and everywhere. It's so easy to be inspired with all the imagery we take in each day on the internet. Pinterest plays a big part!

5. What do you think it is about your blog that people love so much, and made it so successful?  For me, I think your pictures are stunning and I love the way you write.
The age-old question! I'd like to think a mixture of the personality behind the blog as well as the care and attention I put in to each post!

6. Do you have any tips / wise words for new bloggers such as myself?
I do everything by instinct - if a post isn't as good as it should be, I won't post it. I wouldn't work with any brand if it didn't feel 100% right either. If blogging is a huge effort, then you probably shouldn't be doing it - you have to love what you're doing to have any success with it!

7. What has been your highlight so far through blogging?
The friends that I've made and the places I've been able to visit as a result!

8.  What one fashion item couldn't you live without?
Already mentioned them, but deffo my Charlotte O Kitty shoes. I'm so smitten with them.

9. Bloggers seem to be having a massive influence on fashion and society today, how does that make you feel knowing your blog could have such an impact?
It's crazy, isn't it? I wrote my dissertation on the topic, and I could talk about it forever with my blogging friends. The industry is finally taking an interest, and that's amazing.

10.  And finally, me and 'the boy' are going to Cornwall in Summer and I've finally persuaded him to come back via Somerset so we can pop to the Mulberry outlet shop...your influence, so firstly can you please avoid going that week and stealing all the good stuff...and secondly, any recommendations for while I'm there?
Ooh! Lucky you - Cornwall is beautiful. Fortunately for you I don't have the funds for any Mulberry splurges! But make sure to check out the outlets neighbouring shops at Kilver Court, they have Orla Kiely and Aubin & Wills outlets there too!

Unfortunately the Mulberry shop was an unsuccessful trip for me, so I'll just have to keep saving the pennies.

I hope you all love Carrie as much as me, and maybe some day we can all join her for afternoon tea (one of her favourite pastimes I believe!).  Now where's my beret, I need to see if I can start rocking them like Carrie!

a jolly holiday part 2

So me and the boy are back from our little UK holiday, which was lovely...unfortunately the weather was not, but hey, it's the UK and we should have known better than to pack our bikini's and sun hats!

Rather than bore you all with my ramblings I thought I'd give you a picture heavy post instead, a few outfit pictures, a few scenery and of course some foodie shots!

1. Maxi Dress - New Look
2. Leather Jacket - Topshop via Ebay

There seems to be a theme with my choice of clothes colours doesn't there?  I genuinely didn't realise I was such a black and white fan until I started this blog, so there you go!

By the way, the UO dress below was a sneaky holiday purchase, in the sale and only £25, I also got another dress which I'm sure I'll be showing you soon, also in the sale!! And I have to thank Ella for the mint brogues, she posted about them and I knew I had to have them, after a day of pain they are now the  most comfortable shoes I own and haven't left my feet!

3. Dress  Urban Outfitter
4. Mint Brogues - Topshop
5. Top - Primark
6. Shorts - Primark
7. Pumps - Topshop

The Eden Project

Rick Stein does good fish and chips!

Our super smart bathroom!!

The boy

Me and the boy trying to be a bit arty!

The type of Tea Shop I one day want to own!

If you want to know where we went, then check out a jolly holiday, unfortunately the Mulberry shop was unsuccessful and I came out empty handed although with £500 still in my pocket, so not all bad I suppose *grumpy face*.

So I'm sad to be back at work now, always get the blues after a holiday but it just means you're officially allowed to start planning the next one right?!

pastels, pleats and a dipped hem

Ooh a scheduled post, and my 100th post! I can't believe I'm at 100 already, how has that happened? And you lot are still reading, well thank you very much.

I'm on my little holiday at the moment so I'm bringing to you a outfit I wore at the weekend, although this looks nice and summery, it was 30 plus degrees in London on Saturday and I was even too hot in this, crazy right?

This is only the second time I've worn this skirt, I wore it on holiday which you can see in this post.  I've been meaning to wear it since but I needed a white top to go with it, I don't own any other white tops, how has that possibly happened?

Skirt - Topshop
Tee - H&M
Pumps - Topshop

I'm going to leave the outfit to speak to itself because I must admit, I'm having writers block and can't really think of anything to say about it!

By the way, have noticed this is another outdoor post, I'm getting good at this blogging malarky.

a jolly holiday

As you are reading this, me and the boy are en route on our jolly holiday!  I've drawn this lovely little map of what we're up to, and will do a full post when we're back, hopefully of pretty pictures and all things delightful.  Can you ALL please keep your fingers crossed that it at least doesn't rain, I'm not expecting a miracle and the sun actually shining, but I'm at least wanting the heavens to not open, for a change.

Anyway, as you can see from my map, we're flying to Newquay, in a little yellow plane.  Then hiring a car (I hope it's pink like this one!) and driving to Padstow, 2 nights in Padstow were we will meet Rick Stein (that does happen, right?), then driving to Barnstaple to see one of my best friends, then driving to Bath, with a little detour at the Mulberry Factory Shop (oh yeah!) then back to London town.

I was going to do an outfit post, but I think I might leave it at this, and then schedule the outfit post for while I'm away so you don't get too bored.  I'm very considerate like that.

Anyway, I'll probably be a bit quiet in the ol' bloggersphere for a few days, but that doesn't mean I won't be checking my emails etc from time to time, so please do keep in touch.  And, if any of you have been anywhere on my little road trip please make suggestions of where we should visit and what we should do...we really haven't made any plans!

See you in a few days lovelies :)

birds of prey and a giveaway

If you haven't heard of Sugarhill Boutique then where have you been? Only joking, I only came across them about a month ago in the ol' Twittersphere but I have since become obsessed.  Believe me, obsessed isn't an exaggeration, I could spend hours lusting over there pretty dresses, printed blouses, and quirky shorts.

So if you're a bit behind the times, like me, then let me give you a bit of an explanation, they are a British brand (bonus points) based in Brighton (I'm going for a B heavy sentence here) and take inspiration from Bali (see what I did there?).  They have an impressive celebrity fan base including Fearne Cotton and Jameela Jamil and I can't blame them, because all their pieces are just so...lovely.

Well, you can imagine my excitement when Sugarhill Boutique contacted me and asked if I would like not just one of their dresses to feature on my blog, but they also said I could host a giveaway, so not only can I be lucky enough to be a Sugarhill Boutique dress owner..so can you!

I'm wearing their Birds of Prey dress, which is part of their new Autumn/Winter 12 range which will be coming out in the next few weeks.  I got a cheeky sneak preview and now I'm giving you one too.

Just for the record, this is definitely an Autumn dress, I took these pictures in 30 degree heat on Sunday and boy I was warm.  Looking forward to teaming it with tights and a thick scarf though.

And as promised, here's a glimpse of a few other items that are going to be part of the A/W collection, I think I'll be placing an order for that fur trimmed coat!

And now for the bit I know you've all been waiting for really...the giveaway. I'm going to use Rafflecopter again because it's easy.  One lucky reader will win their choice of item from Sugarhill Boutique, you get to choose, how exciting is that?! The giveaway is open for 2 weeks, and the winner will be picked at random from the Rafflecopter, just to confirm, you must be a follower of this blog to enter.

Good luck lovelies :)

weekend wishlist #16

I can't get enough of Sugarhill Boutique and Glamorous UK at the moment, I go on their websites and within 5 minutes have about 26 items in basket.  Unfortunately for me, payday is still a week away so I'm usually just window shopping.  However, due to the amount of time I've spent lusting over their clothes in the last 7 days I thought I would pick a handful of my favourites for this week's wishlist.  Let me tell you, it was not easy to condense it down to 5 items, I might have to do the same again next week, and the week after, and the week after that....! You get the picture.

I've decided to let the pictures do the talking today, I don't think you need an explanation for why I'm loving each piece (ok, I lie, I want to go back out in the sun).  But here's a little summary, the black dress is my absolute fave item, it'll be perfect for Autumn nights.  I can't get enough of prints, and this tie-dye dress would look great with my high shine leggings.

So there you have it!  What's on your wishlist this week?

stylist's trend on trial, trialled: blue eyeshadow

This week's Trend on Trial is blue eyeshadow.  Now, there's a reason I have endless eyeshadow palettes with the blue shadows fully intact, never touched.  I dabbled with blue eyeshadow as a young teenager, and there is another reason I've never since dabbled.  And finally, there's a reason blue eyeshadow belongs in the Eighties!

It's safe to say, this was another trend I was not looking forward to trialing.  Despite what Joanna says, I do not believe I am radiating Summer with this look.  I wholeheartedly believe that no-one looks good in sky blue eyeshadow (deep blue however is different!), and I apologise to anyone reading this who may be a regular blue eyeshadow wearer.

So without further ado, here are the photos:

Without wanting to look too much like a painted lady I ensured that there was no pink on my face, no blusher, no pink lips, I did not want to re-create high school days.  You can see I also forgoed my beloved black eyeliner.  I'm not going to lie, that was partly because I knew I was immediately going to take this off once this post was published, and I didn't want to waste time applying the perfect sweep of black.

I think you can tell it's fairly obvious I didn't like this look.  But I'd love to hear what you think? And I'm more than happy to be proved otherwise, so if you are a blue eyeshadow fan then let me know!

P.S. Looking at these pictures I realise I really need my haircut, if anyone would like to come and sort it out for me I can pay you in cups of tea and maybe even a chocolate digestive?

flirty florals outfit post

It feels like such a long time since I last did an outfit post that I'm not really sure I can remember how to do them.  But the good news is, I braved the great outdoors once again to take these photos.

The boy and I were wandering around to a pub near our flat we'd heard about but never been to, en route we stumbled across this beautiful and quaint little street and I couldn't resist stopping to take some outfit pics.  I also thought that the flowers in the background complimented my dress rather well and I must say I'm pretty happy with the result.  I may have to take a wander round to this street a little more often, the pub was pretty cool too so that's a good enough excuse to get the boy to go back (ssh, don't tell him I said that!).

Pumps - Topshop
Necklaces - Accessorize
Sunglasses - Primark

Now, remember this post where I said I had a little Dorothy Perkins splurge? Well this dress is one of the other items I got.  It's from the Closet range and was only £12.50, I said I got bargains! Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be on their website anymore.  It's really lovely, has a slight silk feel to it, and I'm not sure if you can tell on these photos, but ties with a bow at the back which is a nice additional feature.  I actually think it's much more flattering in real life than it looks on here too.  Oh, and it has pockets, can't beat pockets on a dress!

I also included the close up shot, firstly so you could see the print properly and secondly to show off my necklaces.  They're actually years old but I still wear them often.  I bought the green one myself, and then a few weeks later my friend bought me the pink one for my birthday (without knowing I owned the green one) so now I like to wear them together, like two little chums hanging round my neck.

Anyway, I feel like I'm waffling, today is Friday which makes me very happy indeed, and normal Trend on Trial service will resume tomorrow! I was back 'Oop North last weekend seeing my new niece so I wasn't able to post.

I'm looking forward to spending this weekend in the sun, which apparently is rearing it's head this weekend (fingers crossed!), what are you all up to?

P.S. Here is this same dress (in a different print) so you can see the shape/features a bit better.  I might have to keep my eye out in case this one goes down to £12.50 too!

house of fraser - blogger style challenge

So, I decided to enter the House of Fraser Style Blogger Challenge, the challenge? Create a 'key look for next season'.  As a fan of Edie Sedgwick and giving a nod to the swinging sixties (a key trend for Autumn/Winter 2013), I put together a 'Quintessentially British' (you know I love that term!) inspired outfit.

I spotted this Boutique by Jaeger dress first, and knew it was just perfect.  It was like the 'muse' to the rest of my outfit.  And the great thing about it is that it's just so versatile, I could imagine wearing it to so many different occasions.

I then spotted the Mary Portas coat, you can get much more in keeping with a 60's theme than a classic oversized coat.  I knew the red would like great against the black and white dress too.

And now time to accessorise.  I wanted to keep it simple, not too much colour as I was already working with red, black and white, so the tan leather seemed like just the accent colour I was looking for.  Again, I wanted to keep the 60's feel to it so chose the Pied a Terre heeled brogues and Dune 'doctors bag'.

And finally, I wanted to complete the look with a hint of fun, that those 'swinging' years are so well known for.  The dot tights looked fabulous with the black and white dress, and I couldn't complete it without these cats eye Gucci sunglasses.

Now if only I had the money to buy this outfit myself...

What do you think? Will you be rocking the mod look next Season? I know I will!

boobs, bras and a little review

I'm going to start this post by saying something controversial, it might get me a few negative remarks, I may even bear the brunt of some of those 'anonymous comments' but I hope in the main you'll respect me (?) and possibly even agree.  So, here goes.... I'm happy with my boobs!

There, I said it, not that big of a deal right? Don't get me wrong, I don't think they're perfect, I'm not going to brag about them and I certainly don't want to come off as sounding arrogant.  The thing is, I'm 27 and I've just learn to live with them.

However, one thing I do not enjoy is shopping for new bras.  I really, really hate it.  I don't know if it's because you have to stand in changing rooms, in unflattering light, half naked which inevitably causes me to stand and criticise all of the bits of my body that I don't like.  There is a reason you (and I!) never see my stomach.   Or if it's because it seems to turn into such a lot of effort.  I also have the problem that I can't seem to find any bras on the High Street that fit me, comfortably.  After many years of searching high and low there is one make in Debenhams that suits (it's Presence, if you're interested) but I don't find underwear shopping an enjoyable experience, it's just a big, fat chore in my view.

So when I was contacted by 'Curvy Kate' asking if I'd like to review some of their sets I jumped at the chance (especially as I'd had a cheeky little look at their website).  If I now had two brands to shop from this would make life a little easier, I could also try them on at home in my own time...with the lights down low!

So I suppose you're probably all wondering, I'm a 34D for the record, and 'Curvy Kate' specialise in bras for cup sizes D-K, for the curvier girl.  I liked the sound of this.  They also wanted their underwear to be pretty, feminine even sexy for those of us who are a graced with a bit more up top, rather than the unattractive 'over the shoulder boulder holders' we're normally lumbered with.

I was allowed to chose two sets, so I went for a classic black, and a classic white.  One with a slightly more structured feel (Elegance), and one with a more simple look (Emily).  As soon as I'd opened them I knew I'd made a good choice, and the good news? They fitted perfectly!

They actually fit better than any other bras I already have...sweeping statement I know.  But this brand has just got it right.  They are aware that us girls have curves, and curves in places that some girls don't.  We also need structure and support...and slightly thicker straps.  They have taken everything into account, but also made them look really lovely.

So I'm not going to be adding any pictures of me in the sets, you don't need to see that...you'll just have to take my word for it, and make do with this photos.  Sorry for the poor quality, but have you ever tried taking photos of bras? It's really difficult!  But I hope you can see enough to believe me when I say they're lovely.

And I'll tell you one thing, I definitely know where I'll be shopping for my bras from now on!

style inspiration: millie mackintosh

I thought it was about time I did another 'style inspiration' post, and in keeping with the 'Made in Chelsea' theme (the last one I posted was on Rosie Fortescue) I thought it would be rude not to dedicate this one to Millie Mackintosh.

Millie has really proved herself in the style stakes, it also helps that she has legs that go on forever (I'm not bitter, not at all!) which means she can pull off pretty much everything she puts on.  I reckon she'd even look good in a bin bag! But this girl knows fashion, she braved leather shorts on the red carpet (a daring move) and she rocked them, and she can wear orange like no-one else.

I'm not ashamed to say I searched high and low for the yellow Zara jacket she was sported wearing in one episode of MIC...I never did get my hands on it.  I also stalked her on Twitter for a while til she revealed where the dusty pink lace dress she wore in one particular episode was from, just for the record, it was from H&M, I found it, I tried it...I didn't look like Millie in it.

And if that isn't enough, you have may have noticed I've featured Zara Taylor jewellery a few times in my 'weekend wishlists', well Millie is regularly seen sporting Zara's designs...a girl after my own heart.  Essentially, what I'm trying to say is that someone should give just me her wardrobe (a few sizes bigger though please), so if anyone can arrange that I'd very much appreciate it.

And here's just a few of my favourite looks of hers:

1. Found here - denim jacket with leather sleeves, I want one please.
2. Found here - I could never pull off orange like this, but how amazing are those wedges?
3. Found here - again, me and leather trousers would never happen but with legs like hers why wouldn't you!
4. Found here - maxi skirt, crop top? errm, yep maybe I did replicate that look here.
5. Found here - the perfect black dress.

I'm thinking of making the 'style inspiration' posts a bit  more regular, thoughts? And if I do, any suggestions of who should be featured?

going to the chapel outfit post

This weekend I was at a wedding so I thought I'd do you the honours (for better or for worse, geddit?!) of showing you my outfit.  All of last week I wasn't convinced I liked this dress anymore, I bought it for a wedding in November and had only worn it the once, so I felt I couldn't really justify buying myself a new one.  Especially as there was no-one at this wedding that had been at the last one, but I'm only female and if we can have an excuse for buying a new dress then we will.

Anyway, I realised that I actually couldn't justify buying a new dress, and actually I do really rather like this one. It's another Dahlia number, I really think it's about time they started giving me a loyalty discount...feel free to start a campaign on Twitter for that, I honestly won't mind!

Dress - Dahlia
Shoes - seen here with explanation where they're from!
Headband - Boots (yeah, I was impressed too)

Excuse the 'squashed' in a corner photos, this was our hotel room and there wasn't a lot of space...but I think it adds a certain 'je nais se quoi', I actually couldn't think of how to end that sentence, so thanks to the French for the perfect 'I don't know what'.

I actually styled my hair with my new GHD mini stylers, that I won (amazing, right?) as part of a competition that Jen from A Beauty Junkie in London was posting, with this post. This was the first time I used them, and it took me a while to get used to the smaller ones, but I like how my hair turned out, plus they're perfect for my fringe.

If you're all wedding obsessed like me (don't tell the boy) I'm sure you're actually more interested in seeing the bride's dress than mine...don't worry, I won't be offended, so I thought I'd sneak one in for you, I hope she doesn't mind:

The bride looked beautiful, as did the bridesmaids, and I'd like to think I scrubbed up pretty well!

stylist's trend on trial, trialled: flower petal lips

If you follow me on Twitter (please follow me on Twitter, I'm so close to 500 followers!) you'll know that I wasn't planning on doing a Trend on Trial this week because I'm at a wedding today.  However, one of my favourite things about writing this blog is the amazing comments I get and so many of you lovely lot have told me recently how much you love my Trend on Trial posts.  So, when I got home last night (Friday night) and realised that other than a bit of pampering in preparation for the wedding, and I had nothing to do, I figured that I could squeeze in a cheeky little Trend on Trial.  AND I could do it while enjoying a glass of wine, win win situation all around I'd say?

So please excuse the dodgy top-knot. bags under my eyes and bra straps on show and pay attention to what is important here...the flower petal lips.

Once again, my photos aren't quite bright enough to show this off and as Joanna said, it's impossible to do anything, eat, drink...talk, because the colour just bleeds together and the point of the 'petal' effect is just completely ruined.  Hence, the opened mouthed dodgy pout below.

My other problem is that I didn't have quite the bright fuschia lip colour that I needed for the outer colour.  However, if I had the right colours, and you could actually lead a normal life while wearing, then I do really love the effect.  There's something very delicate and feminine about this.

So I know the pictures aren't great, and I haven't quite achieved the look but I gave it a go...and I posted when I wasn't going to, so I get extra points for that right?

Anyway, outfit post from the wedding coming soon.  Hope you all have lovely weekends, and enjoy the Olympics..as I type this I'm currently trying to get tickets for the Athletics (I've been trying all day, I haven't got high hopes)!

bumblebees and bows outfit post

I don't know whether to thank Sarah from a million dresses for this dress, or to be annoyed with her and never read her blog ever again.  If you're already a fan of hers (like me) then you'll know that every Wednesday she posts her 'Wednesday Wants' and inevitably, every week, I want all of them...and before I know it, I'm adding to basket.

Usually I quickly press the cross in the corner of the page, and try to forget I ever saw the pretty dresses, but this one was an exception.  I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it, then followed the link to Dorothy Perkins and discovered it was only £10.50 in the sale, well it would have been rude not too, right?  I'm not normally a Dorothy Perkins fan, but within ten minutes of being on their site I had another 4 items in my basket (Sarah, I blame you!) but they were all in the sale, and they were all bargains.

Anyway, I had to show you this lovely little frock.  I actually wore this a couple of weeks ago, hence the black tights, luckily I should be wearing it bare legged for the next few months.  Saying that, I forgot to take a jacket to work today and was pretty cold on my walk to the tube, but I'm Northern and hard so I didn't complain!!

Ok, I'm rambling...now for pictures:

And a nice close up pic of my boobs...so you can see the print properly, obvs!!

Do you love it as much as me?!  I'm definitely going to be shopping in Dorothy Perkins a lot more from now on.

And Sarah, if you're reading this, can you just post some less pretty things for the next few months because you are literally draining my bank balance...I have bills to pay you know ;)
